Our Cabana at Lake Powell
Privacy cabana: When Chuck showed me the picture
of the fellow’s boat with a little outhouse built
on the back end, I had to laugh. Apparently, the man’s
wife made that particular sturcture a no-argument add-on
without which she would not go out in the boat. I applaud
her! We carry a porta potti when we cruise, and while we
do not have a permanent privacy box for it, we do make sure
we can use it discreetly. It is not always easy when you
are camping on or near a bare beach—no trees, no dunes
to speak of, and perhaps a group of mostly men along in
their boats.
When I saw the privacy cabana online, I immediately
ordered one. It's made by Stansport the folks who make all
kinds of camping gear. It is not perfect, but it is pretty
darn close. It is bascially a tall tent, 4 feet square at
the bottom. Two people can set it up in 5 minutes; it might
take one person a bit longer. It has two windows with no
see-um mesh for ventilation. It is sturdy enough to hang
a solar shower deal from the inside top. We use our modified
sprayer for showers. You can go in there and do your business,
you can take a shower, you can just stand there and spy
on everyone else if you want to. We took ours out to Lake
Powell last month and also down to the Texas coast on the
cruise from Hell. It was the bright spot on that particular
trip. I’m still ruminating on whether to write that
one up or not.
One thing we especially like about the StanSport
Cabana is that it has non-metallic poles. At Wal-Mart we
recently saw another manufacturers model but it had steel
poles which we know would rust the way we use these things.
Here is the boilerplate from the StanSport catalog:
Well constructed, go anywhere cabana is perfect for a day at the beach, by the pool, in the back yard or for any campsite.
