James Brett Marine Design
I am a marine designer from Auckland, New Zealand. I spent much of my childhood sailing around the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, and the east cost of the North Island with my family, aboard their 12m yacht. This has resulted in an unshakable love for the ocean, and a passion for sailing.
After spending my teenage years experimenting with the design and construction of radio controlled boats of all kinds, I then attended Massey University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Design degree, majoring in Marine Design.
Multihulls are where my main design passion lies. Multihull sailors often talk about their "multihull moment", this is the moment when you sail aboard a multihull for the first time, and are left so awestruck that you can never go back to a monohull again. My multihull moment was in 2006, when I first sailed aboard a Micronesian style Proa.
Shortly afterwards I began designing my own 5 metre proa, Free Radical. After 6 months of construction, and a year of testing and refining the design, Free Radical began making a big impact on the proa scene around New Zealand and overseas. I have sailed Free Radical extensively in the 3 years I have owned her and use her almost every week in the summer season. I have also raced in the two major proa races in NZ, the Hokianga Raid, and the NZ Proa Congress. Free Radical won both races easily, beating 8 other proas from around New Zealand and Australia.
Since then I have started Brett Marine Design, and I am dedicated to the design of efficient and affordable boats that do not compromise on comfort or safety. Visit the "Designs" page to see my full range of designs.
Although I am an avid sailor, I still enjoy designing powerboats and have already created several successful powerboat designs.
