Outrigger Sailing Canoe Plans
by Gary Dierking
I paid a visit to Gary Dierking recently
at his Coromandel, New Zealand home. I found him to be a quiet
and unassuming man who has a wealth of real world knowledge
of, and a passion for, the outrigger canoes he designs and
builds. He took me for a sail in one, and I was amazed that
such a simple, low-tech boat could be so easy to launch and
sail. I understand they are just as easy to build.
Gary first started designing and building
boats back in 1960. Then, between 1968 and 1972, he built
a Jim Brown Searunner 37 called "Bird of Dawning"
in which he sailed 20,000 miles around the Pacific Ocean.
With this building and sailing experience under his belt,
Gary embarked on an eclectic
career of designing and building boats which
has been distilled down to the plans offered here.
Folks who want to buy these plans with New
Zealand Dollars should probably do so through Gary's website:
Outrigger
Sailing Canoes. Anyone interested in the subject
should visit
Gary's Outrigger Sailing Canoes Blog.
