Cobles take many different
forms—this is a very different type to that found
on the NE Coast of England which are used in the sea off
exposed shorelines—this coble is of a type found on
rivers and inlands waters and was used for rod fishing—mainly
for salmon.
She has a very stable hull
with a generous beam making her ideal for the fisherman
who has to stand up and she is usually powered by sweeps
(shown on the drawings) which are secured by a leather strap
to a thole pin
The drawings are set up for clinker/ply
construction with 6 planks per side attached to a narrow
flat bottom plank—the mould shapes are given full-size
and we could develop the plank/panel shapes for those who
want to build her using the stitch and tape technique.
LOD 14’ (4.27m); Beam 5’3”
(1.60m).
