As the winner of the design competition “a boat to go to the islands” organised by Chasse-Marée, in the “revisited tradition” category, Stir-Ven combines classicism and modernity. From classicism, Stir Ven gets the elegance of her clinker built hull; the friendliness of a long, deep cockpit; the aesthetics of a gunter rig with good performance in all weather conditions; the beauty of varnished wood and bronze fittings, and the ability to be rowed when wind is falling (oars are placed under the lateral decks). On the other hand, she is thoroughly modern as shown by her plywood epoxy technology; the reduced maintenance requirements; the ease of trailing and launching; the heavy (180 kg) cast iron streamlined centerboard which allows Stir-Ven to sail like a keel boat with both performance and safety. Stir-Ven is intended for fast day sailing, but she is also suitable for coastal cruising. She has two berths in her small cabin and two others on the cockpit floor under a tent which even allows you to stand up! You can spend several days aboard with access to moorings that would not be available to larger cruisers.
For all that, Stir Ven is one of my very favorite designs. She is a trailerable boat but not limited to a frustrating single day of sailing.

Today, 30 Stir-Ven have been built, nearly half of them by amateur builders. The series is under continuous development. Stir-Ven are now able to race together at classic boat gatherings on the coasts of France. Their exceptional performances are always remarked on.
Stir-Ven is offered by Grand-Largue which provides a complete kit including all plywood parts cut on CNC machines. These kits require hardly any adjustment, and include templates for construction.
Detailed plans are now available both in English.
Full size patterns are available and the corresponding nesting of plywood parts has been modified to cope with standard US panel size (8' X 4').
