I have tried using the peel and stick sanding disks and frankly they don't work for boat building. Use them for more than 30 seconds and they will get hot and fly off across the shop. The Merit "PowerFlex" disks each have a threaded plastic piece (see illustration at right) attached to the back which screws into the special flexible holder.  You can use them for hours on end without them overheating and coming off.

These are professional grade sanding disks which you won't usually find at your local hardware store or lumber yard. You have to go to an industrial supply shop to find them.

The photo on the left above is from the company website and shows one of the disks on an air powered die grinder. If you have one of those and a compressor large enough to run it, great!  If not, do what I do and just chuck the holder in a drill - I like the angle drill as shown in the picture at right. It gives a little better control. But either way, these disks will give you access to places you can only get to by hand otherwise. They are great for getting at globs of epoxy back in corners of your boat.

The 60 grit is about right for most jobs but the 40 grit will really hog when you have a lot of 'frozen snot' to get rid of. Go back with the 60 to smooth things up.

Let us know if you would like to see us stock other sizes or grits.
